I'm looking to carpet a small area which is currently tiled (quarry tiles). Is it a matter of simply putting down underlay then carpet or should I put down some leveling compound first? I'm a complete beginner so any tips as to what i need to do would be appreciated?

it's a case of how level the quarry tiles are and what quality of job you need.

i would say take out any small uneven areas (>2mm deep) with sand/cement mortar (5:1). wet the tiles with water before applying mortar. If this is not good enough then a liquid leveller will be needed (best to use acrylic based compound).

you may be better getting a felt backed carpet and use a spray adhesive to fix at the edges (not as good finish as using grippers). otherwise the carpet grippers will need gluing to the tiles with contact adhesive (the nails won't work).
