Laying carpet underlay

Would like advice on the correct method of laying carpet underlay. I`ve read somewhere that you should lay it at right angles to the carpet and staple it down. Or do you lay the same direction as the carpet the underlay is tredaire softwalk. Any help is apprieciated thanks. Selected wrong topic :?
 
I don't want to hijack this thread, but does anyone have any advice on the best home for this years ISA allowance?
