Hi all,

We have a very small garden which we want to completely deck. at the moment about 3/4 of it is grass, and we are hiring a turf cutter to remove it. We've Decked a small area before, so not complete novices, but that was on existing slabs, not grass.

So, a few questions:

1 - Membrane. can anyone recommend a good membrane to lay over the soil to prevent any weeds etc coming through, and that will last

2- what's the best way to lay the decking? We're planning laying membrane then using bricks to make the joists level, as the garden slopes slightly. Or is it better to level with gravel and then put joists on top of that?

Any help/advice gratefully recieved!!

thank you!

heeelllooo and welcome SharonJB :D :D :D

just be aware you will need planning permission to cover more than 50% off the ground surrounding the origional house

Hi!

thanks for quick reply.

Never knew that!!

We have a front garden and driveway, so THINK  we should be ok!

Will also look into how you get planning permission.

Thanks again.

Hmmm - all it says is 50% of garden. Not sure if it means front and rear gardens, or just 50% of rear garden. Our garden is only 15x18 so ideal for just decking over.

No idea how to apply for planning permission or how long it takes! ARGH ;)

you take the whole plot [say 100sqm]
remove the original house footprint [or as off 1948]say 50sqm
this gives you say 50sqm
you now have a total 25sqm [50%off 50]
minus any extensions/garages/sheds ect adding up to say 15sqm
that leaves 10 sqm
