Hi all long time reader first time poster here.

Im currently renovating my first property and as part of that I’m laying a new MDPE water pipe from the mains through the crawl space to the kitchen which will allow me to relocate the stop cock and sink to another wall.

My issue is the kitchen floor is solid concrete so no crawl space and I’m going to have to cut a channel through it to lay the water pipe.

My plan is cut a channel (angle grinder/circular saw/breaker?) lay a 60mm soil pipe, run the MDPE through this and then backfill with sand and cement.

My issue is upon taking the tiles up to begin work I’ve come across this asphalt like substance which I’m presuming is the original DPC/DPM from when the house was built in 1908.

I will obviously have to carve this up to lay the pipe and I don’t want to cause any damp problems in future.

I’ve researched around and some people have previously suggested laying Ardex A46 and then revealing with Ardex DPM 1 C.

However after a chat today with Ardex (see attached screenshots) it seems that Ardex DPM 1 C is not compatible with asphalt.

What do you guys think is my best solution to maintaining this DPC/DPM, I’ve done some initial research around everbuild black jack but no idea if this is any good?

Would just chucking a load of cheap wickes bitumen paint down do the job?

I’m aware there’s a blue plastic DPM there but not sure if it runs under all the concrete yet.

How thick is the asphalt ? It’s hard to tell in the picture. If you scratch it it should show black.
It should be 15-20mm thick. If it’s old mastic adhesive it would be 2-3mm thickness.

If all solid I’d be going
Ardex na
DPM1c
Ardex na.

Or dig up and a new sand and cement screed with insulation

Hi Daz, thanks for jumping in here I’ve read quite a few of your posts on similar issues previously which were very useful and you introduced me to Ardex haha.

I’ve attached a photo here, the asphalt is about 15mm - definitely more than 2-3mm.

It’s all pretty solid currently but not sure what condition it’ll be once I’ve ran the breaker through it.

It’s actually from one of your posts I got the idea of using Ardex NA and then Ardex DPM1C but I was a bit put off when I messaged Ardex yesterday (screenshots attached) which suggested DPM1C wasn’t compliant with asphalt (where I will obviously have to overlap between the NA and existing Asphalt.

Cut the hole out. Fill in with a46 rapid.
Screed floor with ardex na at 3-5mm
Dpm 1c
P4 primer
Ardex CL or NA on top

Done it hundreds of times over the last 30 years.
