Hi

We're replacing the lino in the bathoom - is there any advantage to leaving the old one down to add extra cushioning?

i think maybe two impervious floor coverings will only seek to trap any moisture between the two.

a recipe for bacteria and smells maybe?

You should not do this. The two products can react with each other , causing pattern bleach between the two. Also if make to soft , they will warp out of shape. And yes they can sweat unless fully bonded together. Guess you mean vinyl not lino. Which should be loose laid.

I've lifted off the lino and binned it - it didn't appear to be stuck to the floorboards very well.

When I buy the new stuff does it just get laid down or should there be some sort of adhesive?

Cheers

Simon

If vinyl it should be loose laid. If lino you glue it down. And you should also plywood over your floorboards.

My DIY book says to lay 3mm plywood too - there wasn't any down before - is this an absolute must?

If the subfloor is very smooth, then no you dont. But it is very rare to get this. Its up to you if you decide to plywood or not. Always a better finish if you do.
