Hi all again, I have in my rear yard 2 extensions with a concrete path running around them which is 4 foot wide, the cocrete was layed by a person who could not smooth the surface very well and looks unsightly although only me and the misus goes ot there, i want to lay a surface of slabs over the top, only small 1x2 foot pieces, would i get away with laying over the top or do i have to dig the old concrete up which i dont and cant be arsed to do. thanks for any replies again Ian

max - go for it. 25+ years ago, shortly after I moved into my current house, Mrs Symptoms wanted to take-up (sorry, me to take-up) the existing (big) concrete patio (there was a horrible pattern scratched into it along with loads of dog paw prints ... nice) - I just couldn't face the task!!!! So I covered it with slabs (brick pattern in red - just like paviours) held with mortar dabs; it's still holding firm. From memory I gave the existing slab a good scrub with a yard broom to get all the dirt/dust off and then laid. I was lucky that I had plenty of clearance to the house damp-proof course - you'll need to check this at your place. There was also an inspection chamber to one side - this wasn't a problem as I layed loose slabs over this sitting on a bed of sand - this was done last as I had left the appropriate gap whilst laying the rest of the slabs; the adjacent slabs retained the sand. The loose slabs don't move either (apart from lifting with a couple of levers).

if the concrete is sound, and at the right level then no reason why not.
