Laying vinyl over old lino tiles

We went out to buy some vinyl and were told that if laid over the top of our old lino tiles the vinyl will soon become stained due to the old lino glue used. He said that it reacts with the vinyl backing.
What should we do?
He suggested a screed,but it sounds messy and expensive

You could always use plywood... 4 or 6mm if you have wooden or chipboard flooring under the tiles.
