I've just noticed a leak between my kitchen sink waste trap and the drainage pipe to outside. I employed an awful 'plumber' last year.

On inspection, the white cap tightens to nothing on the black pipe. The black pipe just slots in with no sealing or means of tightening it.

Does anybody know what I need to fix this, please? Some kind of conversion adaptor?

I've added photos if that helps.

Many thanks in advance.

Should be a black washer in there that tightens against the black pipe to create the seal.
And yes the red ring should be after the seal and before the white threaded ring.

The odds are the plumber lost the sealing washer and back washer. Its probably cheapest to buy a 40mm mechanical waste coupling or trap and use the parts from there unless you can find a small plumbing shop that sell the individual bits. A 40mm trap will usually cost around 6 quid.

Thanks.

Now at the risk of seeming like the total novice that I am; what exactly should I be asking for when I go to buy it, please?

It's a 40mm waste rubber seal.

You can see it in the end of the trap on this pic.

Don't fit the seal first then push pipe in.

Put the threaded white part on the pipe, then the red ring, then the black seal,
then push the pipe in and tighten the white ring hand tight.

Screwfix do a seal kit.
