got a wickes plastic bottle trap for my bathroom sink, there appears to be a leak where the trap screws onto the bottom of the sink waste, have used putty and ptfe tape but still its leaking, not sure if there is meant to be a washer in this part of the trap or not? the only washer supplied is at the other end where it compresses onto the waste outlet pipe.

any ideas? also when im tightening it up it gets to a point where its seems like it can be tightened a bit further and then goes loose again, doesn't look cross threaded though?

Problem one, missing rubber washer.

Problem two poor quality trap.

You could make your own PTFE washer but the trap must offer up to the waste nicely with no forcing.

There should be an 'O' ring or washer to seal the trap to the waste fitting.

You may have stripped the thread in the nut by overtightening while attempting to get it to seal without a washer, so the nut now slips over the thread, and drops into the next turn. If they don't seal when hand tight only, then something is wrong.

Another source of leaks in that area is the waste fitting itself - //www.diynot.com/wiki/plumbing:faq:faq26
