View media item 11164Went to the airing cupboard and found this to be seeping water, whats it called and how far down should i need to drain the water to replace it.Incidently the water seeping out is black should this be so.Thanks in advance.Should have said its coming out of the little screw thing on top.

It's an auto air vent - this allows air to escape from the system.

In the short term, screw the cap down to stop the leak.

It would be a good idea (as the water is black) to de-sludge and flush the system before replacing the AAV.

Regarding the water level, it just needs to be below the level of the joint to be opened.

Many thanks for the reply's will be off to get one, thanks again.

If the Auto vent has a wee adaptor( which it looks like) then it is springloaded and seals as you unscrew it. If unsure just drain it as suggested before.

Before i go and get a new one do i get a like for like or are they much of a muchness, have looked for a makers name on the old one but can't find anything.Edit that, have just found what looks like VEM stamped on the top.

Since you're draining down and flushing the system I would get a BOSS brand from PTS/BSS, you will need a 1/2" one and a roll of ptfe tape.
