Hi guys ,

Currently travelling back from holiday and had the dreaded news from home that my boiler is leaking.

I was expecting it to be around the diverter valve area as usual but seems to further up behind the metal inner casing.

Obviously I know this is where the heat exchanger is. Anything else it can be in that top section ?

Trying to find an engineer to take a look but may be tough on a Sunday.

I had turned the heating off when we went away and the temp has dropped so maybe it hasn't liked getting cold!

Got my dad to turn the water off and run the taps until they stopped. Not sure if this helps or not as there is still water in the system.

Thanks

Check pressure gauge for drop. Mop/dry up the leak and then turn water back on to see if leak starts again. If so it's DHW side. If not then top up pressure again and if leak starts then it'll be heating side. If it's coming from inside the room sealed part of the boiler you'll need an rgi. Post your area and you might be lucky someone on here would come out to you!

Thanks.

I'm in Larkfield in Kent near Maidstone.

Fingers crossed

Hi,

Pressure had dropped. Wiped dry where the water was coming from and turned the water back on. No new water appeared so pressurised the system and again no new water.

Have turned the boiler back on and have the heating going full. No leaks currently.

It's coming from in-between the red things where the metal door meets the frame.

Maybe is it likely to do it when it cools?

Needs looking at by a Gas Safe engineer. There is rust showing near your 'red thing'. (Sorry used your terminology!)

Hi guys,

Quick update and looking for opinions on the way forward. Engineer has looked at it. No sign of leaks but he suspects the heat exchanger has a tiny leak that has sealed itself due to me using the boiler again. There was a small green patch on it. (not to say it won't leak again if i stopped using it and it got cold).

He said its uneconomical to replace it. I have seen reconditioned heat exchangers at a good price. Is the labour high on this type of boiler to replace it?

We are planning to extend our property next year from 3 to 4 bedrooms. Would this have any influence on the decision of making the boiler last a bit longer or just replace it now and get one that can serve the new rooms adequately?

Chances are the old one wouldn't be good enough for the new load, I'm not sure.

Thanks
