Do you have to remove the whole waste trap to reseal it or is there another way.

I have an acrylic bath and the waste trap has move form the middle to on side and when you fill the bath up and empty it. The water runs down and them comes out around the sides underneath the bath. I think the Plummer that put it in did not use a Silicone base sealant. I have tried to tighten it up but makes not difference.
