Before I disposed of our bottle cooler is it worth getting it regassed? Its nearly 12 years old and has bee working like a champ in our Village hall 24 x 7 but recently it only gets down to 12 degrees C.
If I turn it off and leave for a while then turn back on it will cool down to 4 degrees but as soon as you open the door to retrieve a bottle etc, the temperature creeps up again to 12 degrees and never reduces. The coils for what they are, are clean and the door seals still OK. I have a feeling that its lack of refrigerant. I know it's old but as a standby wondered if it was worth getting someone to regas it?
Many thanks

ps it has R600a/35g as refrigerant

I thought 12ºC was correct for wine etc? A fridge goes down to 4ºC and a freezer -18ºC, which is the freezing point of brine.

I looked at my mother's little freezer, I put an energy monitor on it, and found it was not switching off. So the question was loss of gas, or faulty thermostat? So all my thermometers did not go down low enough, so put in some brine, and it froze solid, so seemed likely faulty thermostat, new one fitted, and also got a thermostat for beer brewing and found it was going down to -24ºC.

So the question one is the motor cycling? Have you tried an energy monitor with it? I found there was nowhere I could take the freezer to in order to get it re-gassed. It was small enough, but all the refrigeration guys were mobile, with a £60 call out fee, and extra for any parts used, and it cost £90 for a new unit.

Some units control using motor speed, but most switch on/off. If it hits 4ºC once, one would think likely thermostat. The Ink Bird

thermostat means no longer do we need to make a thermostat to brew beer, I used one of these

and had to put it in a box with socket and plug etc, but now ready-made, and I use one of my brewing thermostats to turn the old freezer my mother had into a fridge. Also handy to measure temperature with.
