I have two lights and two switches in the kitchen.

One light had just three wires (earth, live, neutral) and the other had 9 wires.

I've connected a new set of lights to each (I think correctly) and now have the following problem...

The light with three wires is constantly on, whether the switch is on or off. The other light is working as normal. I don't understand whats happened?

please help.

A diagram and little more info would help.
Have you connected the new lights directly to the switch, did you assume that the red & black were phase and neutral?

Switch wires at the accessory are live feed and live return to the light fitting.

One light had just three wires (earth, live, neutral) and the other had 9 wires.

9 wires!! I would get an electrician in to find out what the 'eck is going on.

the one with three wires was simply like for like with the new fitting (earth-earth, live to live, neutral to neutral)

the second fitting started like this

ceiling_rose.gif

and that has been connected like this

All three Earths - Earth
Black Switch - Brown
Other Blacks - Blue
All Reds together.

I was lead to believe this was correct, and that light works so?

I can only GUESS that I have some wires mixed up somewhere?[/img]

Misread your first post, thought you had connected to the switch not the rose.

Light that works is ok if wired as in the diagram

Need more info on the one that doesn't work properly.

What colour are the 3 wires at the rose?

So you have connected the new light to the terminals of the old light and the two lights are now in parallel across red and black but the light now stays on permanently?

Parallel = red connected to Live of each light and black to Neutral of each light

Are you sure you have not changed anything else? what happens if you disconnect the new fitting?

they're both new fittings. I would have thought if I had not done the one with 9 wires properly it wouldn't work and fuses would have blown.

But I can't see where I could have gone wrong on the other its just like for like?

It would blow a fuse if had got switch live (black) mixed with another black wouldn't it?

I would say its "get the meter out" time.

Did the old fitting incorporate a switch?

Have you had the switch plate off?

Does the cat have a screwdriver?

I do not own a mutlimeter? I suppose I could buy one, I don't really know what I'm checking for once I get one though?

I don't know what you mean by the old fitting incorporating a switch? they both worked from the wall switches fine before I put the two new ones in, now I have one working fine and one one perminantely?

I haven't touched the switches at all. we had them off the other day but only to paint neater near it.

I don't have a cat, never mind a cat with a screwdriver??????
