need some advice regarding a ceiling rose I have in my hall. The switch which operates this light also works the outside light too. The switch is approx 1.5 metres away from the fitting. We are currently undergoing works in the house and had it plastered etc.

The light was working until recently but has since stopped. I am unable to get beneath the floor boards to check to see why this has happened.

I know that there is no power to the ceiling rose but not sure how/why this has happened? The reason I know there is no power is because the other day I decided to wire a cable across the room direct from the switch to the fitting and hey presto the light worked. Obviously I cannot use this as a permanent measure!! I therefore need to get live power to the fitting but am not sure the best way to do this??

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

sounds like whatever work you've had done has damaged the cable..

could be a screw through it, or the plasterers trowel ( wait for the indignant cries from plasterers everywhere.. ) or any number of things..

without being there to check it, it's hard to tell..

yeah thats what I thought. it will be difficult removing the floor boards but think that with a little brute force should be able to do it. think this is the only way of getting it sorted. Maybe run a wire from another ring main or something?

NO - you mustn't interconnect different circuits, particularly ones with different MCB ratings.

You need to find out where the problem is - if it's accessible under the floorboards then you can fix it there, but if it's a problem with the switch cable in the wall then you'll have to pull it out and replace it. If it's just plastered directly in then you'll have to hack the plaster away.
