Light indicator for extractor fan

Yes, I have 2 of them (main bathroom and en-suite), the latter gets used daily. Indicator lamp isn't that bright though.

this would be my concern. the extractor fan is at the top of the wall near the ceiling. so the light on the fan itself may not be that visible to my elderly FIL.

Yes something like this, might have chase down or a bit of trunking (maybe)

that was the solution i had thought of by it needs chasing in the wall and trunking, which means redecorating. that switch would replace the pull chord, which can be set to be permanently on.

i was hoping there is a simpler solution but it appears there may not be one, apart from buying a new fan that has a light on it.

If he left it on by mistake it wouldn't really matter, my wife and kids leave all the lights on permanently, I dont think they know theres a switch.

lol. does a 4" extractor fan like that cost much to run if he accidentally leave it running all day? how much would it cost to run a day if it was left on 24 hours?

How old is the fan?
My downstairs loo fan is built into the ceiling of an extension. I fitted it when the extension had its flat roof was replaced. So my fan is 20 years old and I might as well replace it when the roof is replaced, to save much more work if not.

Basically, isn’t it easier to replace with a fan & light, than fit a lamp to an old fan?

You would just need a short length of surface mounted trunking down to a surface mounted switch, no redecoration required. Then switch on at the pull cord and cut it off so it can't be switched by it but just the new wall switch.

Remove the fan front plate to see how much space there is inside.

Go to CPC Farnell/RS Components/Rapid Electronics/Conrad/eBay/AliExpress, and from the choice of literally thousands of panel indicator lights available, pick an appropriate one.

Drill a small hole in the fan front plate, mount indicator light, connect it across the motor.

Hang something near the fan so it moves when fan is on. So can see that move rather than hear the fan. Ribbon with press stud into ceiling, would not need to be big.

It's an extractor fan. A ribbon, etc, will get sucked into it.

Mmm.

Might be worth a try, if it's easy to accomplish, but it doesn't look like a powerful fan so I wonder if anything short enough would need to be so close & short that it wouldn't be noticeable.
