light switches off automatically after 60 secs

That's the fellar.

Does the output of that Tx just supply the one single light which you have removed, or does it loop off to other fittings too?

as you have probably guessed by now, you can ignore my posts, I was barking up the wrong tree. :(

Thats the transformer

And as it says on the label
Temperature limited internally

Interrupt Supply to Reset the Overload Protection

So the lamp is overloading it and instead of doing a cheapo and destroying itself it is shutting down safely and waiting till it is reset AND the correct size of lamp is fitted to prevent it being overloaded again.

Saying that, a 50VA transformer should run a 50w lamp which is right on it's limit. It is possible the lamp has a fault and is pulling too much current.
Do you have another 50w lamp you can try?

That 50VA you mentioned means the same as 50 Watts (approx)
It may be that the lamp (bulb) you have is drawing over that. Try changing the lamp or failing that try a lower wattage one.

Ok so I thought I knew how a circuit works but probably I don't lol.

Here's the slightly bigger picture:

From the transformer the primary goes round to where you can see the live showing on the right and at the minute I've no idea where those wires go. The secondary goes to the bulb giving me the trouble on the left of pic.

And does anyone know where to go to get one of those transformers or is it just a matter of getting it reset? How would that be done (in foolproof terms)?

If you find it is the transformer at fault then it is a case of just replacing it with a suitable sized one.
You could do with a junction box or chock box to house the connector blocks in too.

You could just get rid of the transformer and lamp fitting and change it for a 240v fitting.

Some people prefer the light that ELV (i.e. 12 volt via a transformer) lights give off. Sometimes ELV is necessary (e.g. certain zones in a bathroom)

If it were me I'd just change the transformer and fitting for a 240 Volt GU10. (presuming it's not in a bathroom etc.)

aye it's a bathroom.

where do I get those kind of transformers (preferably a bricks n mortar shop) and although it may seem a stupid question, how do i disconnect that kind of transformer from the wiring?

Screwfix sells them just look for a 60w or VA transformer and you definiteley need to put thise connectors in a junction box or choc box. If you have any other downlights then just to be on the safe side get them checked out as lose connector blocks like that are not allowed and are a danger . You just remove the brown and blue leads feeding the old transformer and swap for the new. then at the lamp end just swap like for like.

BUT before you do this just try the light again with the transformer as far away from the lamp as it will go and not wrapped in insulation. You may find its not faulty at all but just overheating due to being too near the hot lamp.
