Trying to replace a light switch, however, I noticed that instead of the original connection being on the terminal screw, one wire is secured in a hole behind the light switch. Is there a reason for this or can this wire be connected to the terminal screw instead. :?

US electrics are different to UK although it may be possible to shed some light (sorry) on the matter if you could give a clearer description. A picture perhaps?

It's not clear what you mean. It would help if you can tell us which wire (hot, neutral, ground) is connected to this "hole behind the light switch". If you're not sure, go by wire color (neutral is white, ground is green, hot could be any color) or test the wire with a voltmeter. If you could post a link to a similar switch on a web site like Home Depot's, that would also help.
