Isn't the switch wiring disconnected at the ceiling (and therefore out of circuit?)

Could the dryliners have screwed through a cable?

It is, so eliminates both the switch cable and the switch from circuit, so we could assume the fault lies there.

And I to, would not rule out mechanical damage.

Waited a few days for the plaster to dry, wired it up again, job done
