Lining of boxes

Often instrument cases are made of wood , but have a black 'felt' coating over all the compartments to protect the instruments ..
Typical (but old) such case in sample pic




Is this 'sprayed on' or is it a glued on fabric ? .... need to make a few storage boxes and need to have them lined to protect the contents.

The instrument case you are showing is most likely vacuum formed flocked styrene https://www.km-wholesalesuppliers.co.uk/Products/Consumable-Materials/Plastics/HIPs/Flocked-HIPs

Back in the day, I worked for a company that made bespoke display cases. We would use brushed nylon fabric glued in to whatever the box was. If it was for shaped instruments, we would rout the shape for the instruments out of Plastazote HD foam, and then rout the shapes in thin ply. Routing was done with a pin router following a jig template. The brushed nylon was then stuck over the ply and turned back underneath before the ply was stuck to the plastazote

Display boxes and cases were often covered in a fabric called arbatex - a bit like buckrum bookbinding cloth but a bit thicker - https://www.schmedt.com/arbetex-leather-cloth-medium-thick-with-coarse-grain/2279-001
