I have had a couple of instances where I am fixing curtain rails and drilling into the wall I only get half inch in until the drillbit hits an impenetrable substrate. Does anyone know what this is and how can I drill into it? Tried masonry and metal bits but no joy.

Like your subject says, yes that will be probably be the lintel. Not knowing where your window is (office/house/flat/orbit space station) can only guess that its either concrete of steel.
Try use small drill bit (ie. 6mm) to get hole started them progress up.

you might even be hitting the re-bar in a concrete lintel...bad luck! a good s.d.s bosch pro will usually go through anything.

even a cheap SDS drill will go thru `crete.....gotta be worth buying one even for a few diy jobs ;)

(if feasible)

if you start drilling 150mm past the window reveal then you should be past where the lintel is sat (as most are installed with the minimum bearing)
