Probably - but you might just as well do the test that was suggested (with multimeter on it's lowest resistance/continuity range, and the lamp obviously not plugged in!) - just so as to be totally sure that you can sleep soundly at night!

Single pole, so it is important to get the connections right.

No, they're double pole. Always have been.

Many are single pole. I have just taken one in my junk box apart to confirm.

If you still have the cut off plug, use the multimeter on that to see whats L and N

This is not a 100% reliable test as the manufacturer may not realise the need to have Live via the switch.
