I know no one can answer 100% correctly without seeing it and i should get a SE to check BUT if a 1st floor wall is built off floorboards and there is no wall plate/joists sat on the wall is it fair to assume that it can be removed without the need for propping and replaced with a studwork wall?

Thanks. Fairly confident it is non structural and the studwork will go straight in after it's removed.

If the door casings upstairs measure about 4” in width, it usually means you have partition block walls upstairs.

I was going to say 2 inch blocks, but as it's early 1900's it could be a stud wall with a brick on edge infill between the studs.
