Locking a gate from both sides

Built a gate for the driveway as it was much-needed. It's since been undercoated and had a further three coats of top coat. Only job left is to put the door furniture on.

It has to be locked by a drop bolt/surface bolt (the one pictured) -- it cannot be locked into the wall on the left of my picture as that's not my wall.

I cannot think of a way of locking the gate with the attached bolt. Thought of cutting out a section of the gate in order to access the padlock from both sides, but the bolt has to be turned 90degrees and pushed up which will be difficult to do if you're on the wrong side.

Anybody's brain better than mine and can come up with a solution?

The gate looks a very tight fit between the posts. Have you allowed for any expansion of the timber when it gets wet?

Yes 3/4" of an inch either side. The gate is just held loosely in position in those pictures.

I recommend the Gate mate brand as they gave worked well for me, olders being 11 years old. (But they do cost more than the multiple no name copies).

And note that there are typically two versions, 50mm and 70mm to meet the thickness of your gate.

I have a gatemate and it’s been good for knocking on ten years.
I do have a flap of waterproof material covering the mechanism (as seen on the backs of trucks)
Don’t know if it helped but doesn’t do any harm

Thanks both @SFK and @Tigercubrider -- Gatemate is the brand I went for. Going to fit it in the lower corner where the timber will accommodate it nicely at ~60mm depth.

Garage is a state due to various projects but currently waiting for the final coat to dry.

So the gate is fixed and in position, as per picture (ignore the flummoxed cat..)

Hinge pins greased up the gate opens and closes nicely. However when it was open the other day, a gust of wind blew it closed and with no stop or catch, it carried on inwards and bent one of the hinges. I've since replace the hinge and re-adjusted anything, but this will happen again. I either lock it closed or lock it open into the floor, but I guarantee somebody else will open it and wander off...

Is anybody aware of a hydraulic gate closer which could be mounted on the inside of the gate (behind the gate), and against the wall to the right? They all seem to mount on a post so the closer is sat straight when closed, but of course I don't have one in my set up -- maybe there's a better solution. I thought about a stop mounted to the floor on the handle side of the gate, but the gate would likely hit it with such force it could cause damage.

I reckon even if it hit it at full pelt, the gate will just flex and bounce back.

You could simply fix a chain/ cable to the gate inside on the right, going to a pulley with a counterweight ?
To pretty it up, put the counterweight in a tube.

Some smaller garden gates fit springs to close them.
The fire door between my laundry room and garage uses a spring loaded lever against the door, tension is increased by winding the spring up.

To stop it slamming, a stop set further back but using a damper? Either rubber or potentially a larger version of the closers on my kitchen cabinets.
