Have just been to a Worcester 20/25 which ran fine and then locked out after about 5/6 minutes. There is a phial in front of the red expansion vessel and on my boiler which is the same the phial is under the expansion vessel. Any thoughts? Regards.

Yes the phial will be for the fire valve which should be on the outside of the building but if that activates you have to reset it manually-have you not got the boiler running again yet?

Hi there, thanks for replies - the burners fires again when reset button is pressed, thought I would mention the phial as it is in a different place in my boiler. Could the phial detect heat from the red expansion vessel and lockout for safety? Any further thoughts? Cheers. :?

The lockout probs have nothing to do with the fire valve in this case as youve stated it will fire up again after pressing re set button-fire valve would need to be manually re-opened.Listen to the burner when it fires up-if it starts to splutter b4 it goes to lockout it will be a fuel problem,if after arunning a while if goes to lockout without spluttering id first look at the transformer-or possibly a faulty photocell-had 1 instance where it was a faulty control box-was overheating the cutting out.

Wouldnt have thought so-as I said before, the fire valve needs to be manually reset so you would know if that was faulty, sometimes its a case of squeeze the phial in where you can get it, so they're not all going to be in the same place. -you reset it on the valve body itself. Looks like your fault is somewhere else-could be photocell, control box, fuel starvation--you need to start eliminating some of it.

That'll be the fuel solenoid closing.

Thanks chr15 - presumably if this is the case the coil has started to break down and closing when it shouldn't.

new oilman, what can i say?

ffs. thats what ill say.

ask yer gaffer. or if youre on your own, then its time for some training.

Could be but there's a list of things it could be as I said before-have you not done any training on any oil boilers/burners or have you just gone in at the deep end with this choice of career?

As you're in Norfolk I would recommend calling Sam at IDBS, what he doesn't know about oil boilers is not worth knowing

When I went to this boiler it was very late in the day and I was not in a position to start to change the photocell/coil etc to try to rectify the problem that is why I thought the forum would be a good idea to see if anyone else had seen the same symptoms. I think I will replace the coil, clean the photocell and go from there. I really do appreciate help given as I am new to the job and on my own. I have done Oftec but this did not cover any fault finding and other courses I have been on cannot possibly cover all potential faults. I am therefore on a very steep learning curve learning as I go along. As I come across a fault I am more prepared for the next time. Companies are loathed to offer work experience because they assume at my age (30's) that I will become competition. Thanks again to all. Wilhelm - I assume you never had to learn or have help with training!

Yes,sometimes, when you come into the business later on as a mature student say, then it is like chucking yourself in at the deep end, sometimes this can be good for you as long as your a quick learner and you can satisfy your customers, thats the main thing,as long as they think they're getting their moneys worth then you'll be ok-have you tried the oftec forum for technical advice too-should be no problem if you're a member.
