Lots of info on this forum but it is not clear which way the boards are laid - in line with rafters or across please ?

Boards should be laid perpendicular to the direction of the supporting timbers (but in lofts it sometimes doesnt matter so long as they are adequately fixed).. often people will counter batten the loft before boarding to add extra height for insulation (do a search)..
