Loft Conversion - Planning Permission

Hi All

Does anyone know whether you need planning permission for a loft conversion in a non-conservation area. We would like:

1. One skylight to the front of the property (possibly two but unlikely); and

2. Dormer windows to the rear. There have not been any extensions to the (Victorian) property and so have not used any of its permitted development area anywhere else. Ideally we would like full-width dormer windows running to the edge of the roof (two houses opposite (i.e. those at the end of our garden) have done exactly this.

The property is a mid-terraced victorian property.

Hey ziggy, just phone your local council planning office - ours have a duty officer who gives an initial heads-up on this kind of thing

You don't need permission for the loft conversion

You don't need permission for normal roof windows at the front which are more or less flush with the roof.

You do need permission for dormers which can be seen from any road

Steve thanks for your post. Have spoken to COuncil and they said we have to send in a form with £100 or so and they'll confirm within 8 weeks if we need planning permission.

Woody, the rear dormer will not be visible from any street. Is there a restriction on how wide and deep any such dormer could be?
