Batten lampholder wiring



Question deleted before I checked the replies, as I figured it out, but have another question regarding 'standard practice' of wiring, thanks

By the way - I have figured it out slightly different, but the same result, but from an electrician's point of view, should the red live wire from the mains be on the Loop, as you've suggested, or can it be on the "Live" screw terminal (as I figured it out)?

It's simple in that the switch just breaks the circuit between the Live and Loop terminals.

and PS. Re: the pics -- I've spent much of the day going through old DVD data disks, CD's and even recovered data from a formatted drive (and still doing so in the background!)

I checked the Wiki and it's not the same as what you posted.

That's a good diagram, but this wiring assumes just one 3 core mains cable and not two, i.e. no "supply to next light", as well as a switch fitting with 2 lives and an earth.

Usually, I put the red/brown to the loop and the (sleeved) black/blue to the switched Live.

I have seen it the other way round, but that doesn't seem logical to me.

I get the idea of your post, but am unsure about the wiring reference you make.

There is no sleeved cable in this situation: just a 3-core flat grey mains cable I assume is wired up to the upstairs lighting, with a live (red), neutral (black) and earth (green/yellow) and another 3-core flat grey cable from the switch which is located nearby.


What I thought was logical was to have the Live wire from the mains screwed to the terminal labelled "Live", but you're saying I should put that to the Loop terminal and have the brown live wire from the lampholder to the Live terminal block, with the Live from the main on the Loop terminal.

Which is 'standard practice' do you know please, as I'm moving soon and don't want the new residents getting into any bother with the wiring.

The centre terminal in a rose are designed for the loop: the live wires. The others either side are meant for neutral (with three terminals) and the switched live (with two).

You mention 3 core cables later on, but in your OP, you only mention two twin & earth cables??

Maybe I didn't explain properly in the first question you refer to - it made sense to me, but I was writing it!

So I explained in more detail later on.

Sorry. If you've got twin red or brown, then yes, a red to the loop & one to the switched live terminal.

As you point out, the switch just breaks the live to the lamp.
