Hi all, I have a loft room in my house which was converted by the previous owners and used as a childs bedroom. It already has windows electrics lighting and a radiator. My issue is max headheight is 171cm from the flooring to the top of the plasterboard. There is 10cm of space above the plasterboard, I know this because I took out the lights. Also there is a raised floor which is a further 21cm above the floor joists. The raised floor is supported by the roof joist by being bolted to them, Im no builder but I don't think this is that safe. i've tryed to show this on the pics i've taken to give you a better understanding. My main question is could I take up the whole floor and get rid of the raised floor and just lay the new floor on the original joists to give me that extra head height which would mean I could fully stand up in it. Also would you say the way it it at the moment is it safe? i've tryed to take some pictures in my album loft to give you a better understanding as I feel this room is wasted as it is and im just wondering why they would of raised the floor in the first place. Thx in advance as any info will be appreciated
Also in the picture the cupboard is hiding the chimney breast

Sounds alot like you have posh loft storage space and not a conversion.. you should consider getting the job done properly.. with building regs and planning etc.. strip everything back, install supporting steelwork and new floor, then insulate and board it all back up.. assuming you can squeeze some stairs in..#

Oh to answer your question, well chances are the ceiling joists have been put to their limit from all the extra load so dont have any parties in the loft space..
Also the area may be dangerous in a fire as chances are there are no means of escape.. as it was also probably done without building regs then there is no guarantee any of the materials, electrics or heating was installed even remotely right..
So personally i wouldnt let anyone stay up there for long periods of time.. and definitely would let anyone sleep there.

Thx for reply there is already stairs going up into the loft although they are quite steep, And I agree its like a posh storage area. If I was to rip all this out what would be the estimated cost of getting this to a fully fuctional room. Ile be keeping my daughter out of there for the time being
