hi
i am looking to rip out my coal fire open the hearth both sides and install a dual aspect multi fuel log burner, how big does the hole need to be for the burner to fit i.e. what does the gap need to be from the burner to the wall?

Picked this thread up a bit late.

Any stove supplier will tell you that and tell you what you should face the back and sides of the opening with. Heatproof tiles are available but are expensive so the wider and deeper the surround to the stove the better. Enough space and a good fireproof cement render would
be okay.

Also bear in mind that the more space around the stove the more efficient it will be. The best place for a stove in theory is right in the centre of the room so it can radiate and convect out equally.
