Log periodic aerial elements length

Something to consider...
Or make a few on here snigger lol.

I fired up my HF transciever this weekend, picked up a lot of European stations as if they were in the room with me.
Now for an aerial I only have about 14' of wire strung along one of the joists going the length of attic room I'm in.
Anyhoo I thought I'd try and tune it in and see if anyone can hear me.

Well tuning it in was not very good, and no one could hear me, I did however manage to send my youngest's PC into a tizzy
and he came up with a USB interface that stopped working, a reset soo sorted everything and I unplugged my microphone and put it away again - back to listening only.

Then it hit me.
My roof has 50mm Kingspan insulation with silver foil both sides.
No wonder reception and transmission are poor up here lol.
So make sure you have not got kingspan in the rafters :)

Re the aerial, looks like a multiband one, ISTR they have different length elements etc.
The best way to test it is to connect it and see how it works, if it does then test complete.

Aerial project complete!

I wasn't happy with the Raptor elements layout so returned it for refund and got a Blake log periodic @ TS.

Now installed using the signal finder I invested in, I get about 75% signal strength and 100% signal quality according to the TV and all channels I've tried are flicker free. My aunt has a tri boom aerial installed in her bungalow attic and gets about the same signal strength/quality.

When using the signal finder, I kept turning the adjuster down till I got a very slight tone in a very narrow angle and set the aerial in the middle of that. The signal finder just needs a fly lead and its 9v power cable attached to work.

Can you come and do mine? Well I have an aerial, but not used, Moel-y-Sant does not broadcast many channels so hardly worth the effort, I do use the satellite dish, but I have not a clue when the dish is being used, and when the internet is being used, when using Sky Q, but find I am using YouTube more and more, and question if still worth the Sky fee.

I'm not sure if Google gave the correct area but I did find two transmitters with vertical polarization.

This is was Google quotes (copied and pasted),

The Bala TV transmitter, located in Wales, serves the local area with Freeview digital TV. It is a vertically polarized transmitter. For optimal Freeview reception in Bala, ensure your aerial is in good condition, pointed toward the transmitter, and use a wideband or appropriate group aerial.

The Ffestiniog TV transmitter (often serving the Blaenau Ffestiniog area) uses Vertical (V) polarisation for its digital television (Freeview) signals. As a relay transmitter in the Wales region, it operates with vertical polarisation to prevent interference with main transmitters, requiring aerials to be mounted vertically (up and down).

As a relay station it does not have commercial stations, so no UKTV channels UK Gold etc. So at Llanfair Caereinion we have a great narrow gauge railway, but terrestrial TV is useless.
U & Gold as it is now known is not available on any terrestrial or free satellite service in the UK (and may well be paywalled on streaming services also). https://www.uandgold.co.uk/

In any case terrestrial and satellite broadcasting of TV signals is doomed.
Internet delivery is the way forward.
Freely is the new streaming biased Freeview/Freesat replacement from the same semi-incompetents (with some channels in higher quality as a result). But no Gold.

are on free platforms I had clearly picked the wrong one, I do it seems to have :- Freely, Free to Air, Freeview, and Sky Q. Freeview is useless, Free to air the program guide is not much good, the freesat has nearly as many programs as Free to Air, but better program guide. The Sky Q includes things like YouTube in the package, but can also get YouTube direct to TV, often we have no idea which we are watching, only when we have nodded off, and try to go back do I realise I was watching direct on the TV, the Sky box I can go back an hour.

Watching things like QI the YouTube often is not a full program but best bits, which misses out bits, where when the Sky box has recorded them, we are looking at full programs. And if I nod off, can watch it again.

Problem with Youtube, it will autoplay the next, so I have not realised how late it is until I see the dawn, at least with satellite it drops into late night adverts, and I realise how late it is.

Watched a Father Brown last night, black & white, Alec Guinness, also watched Kenneth More, and Mark Williams interesting to see the different slants on the same characters.
