Looking after an SLA battery

If you have not used the scooter for years, then surely the batteries will be goosed by now :)
That was always my thoughts, however, father-in-law died, found two 7 Ah batteries which came off his chair lift, and thought I would give it a go, had to put in parallel with a good battery, as smart charger would not charge it, did one at a time, and the energy monitor showed it had charged the donor battery to 14.4 volts then all stopped, the voltage would drop to 12.8 volts, then charger would start again up to 14.4 volts and off again. This was repeated many times, but so much else going on I had not taken them off charge.

After around 11 days, as if someone had flicked a switch, the battery started to charge, it went through the whole sequence, and so removed the donor battery and put the second 7 Ah in parallel with first, and I go a repeat of what had happened with the first, clearly not used to engine start at 7 Ah, but they seemed to work as if they had never been left flat.

Since then done it a few times, leaving a battery on charge for a week does seem OTT, but it has in the main worked, however need to keep an eye on them, had one with a short circuit cell, which resulted in discharging the donor battery, but it charged up again OK.
