We're in a 6 storey apartment block on the first floor. The pump house / room is directly below us and the noise is very irritating.

It starts with the pump running for around 10 seconds followed by what sounds like a heavy relay clicking off. This continues periodically during the day and night.

Before I approach the managing company I'd ideally like to have an idea as to how this can be resolved. I was thinking of asking them to sound insulate the devices but I'm sure there are better ideas?

Does anybody have any please?

Unfortunately it wouldn't be easy to insulate the motors directly. The fins that are visible are for cooling, and the cover at the end of the motors houses a fan that draws air over the fins to keep the motor cool. It might be possible to house them both inside an acoustic enclosure that had additional ventilation.

Much would depend upon where the noise escapes from. Sound proofing the whole room might be possible, but again if the room is externally vented for cooling purposes and the noise is escaping via the vents, then to block them off would involve installing an alternative method of cooling such as a heat exchanger or air conditioning, which would be expensive and might create even more noise issues.

It's possible that the noise is produced because of some faulty component that needs replacing or maintaining, which could be the case if its only started recently.
