Well, it obviously wasn't Joe-90, that would be far too fast for him to be driving at on a single carriageway.

Modern cars wont let you select reverse if the cars moving forward will they? It makes that horrid grinding noise. Its to do with the construction of the gearbox. Reverse is different to the others. I think a similar mechanism stops you selecting first while moving backwards.

I know someone who actually achieved the feat of selecting reverse whilst moving forwards. He was trying to change into second.
In his Dad's car...

Crunch. Doh! Won't go in.
Crunch. Doh! Won't go in.
Crunch. Doh! Still won't go in!
Crrrrrunch! SCREEEEEECH!!!!! (Car comes to an abrupt halt in a cloud of tyre smoke from the rear wheels). Doh!

Surprisingly he got away with it and nothing actually broke. Not to be repeated though.

I recently saw an episode of Mythbusters where they tried this with an Automatic and a Manual transmission. The point was to see if you could stop a car by putting it into reverse. They drove at 50mph and then tried to put the cars into reverse. The Automatic had a built in mechanism that prevented the gearbox going into reverse even when selected unless the car was stationary. On the manual, they could not get it in gear, just ground the gears.
