If they 'didn't know', and that is also what I understood from OP, then it either did or did not come with XP installation CD, hence my thoughts about contacting manufacturer.

NEC are packard bell and they use a hard drive recovery partition which if i remember rightly cannot be seen under windows or under windows install its hidden by dos commands try press F11 when u get the nec logo and see if it starts the system recovery if so u will know for next time if this laptop is older than 2004 ish it will use system recovery cds
