loud banging noise when washing machine spins

How much water is in the drum? Sounds like too much.

Put it on a drain cycle, could be a blockage in the sump or drain pump or waste hose/'U' bend.

Then on a spin only cycle, noise still there with an empty drum?

With an empty drum it spins fine.
With clothes in it, drained, it makes the noise again and shakes the entire machine violently.

Does the inner drum feel loose?

Inner and outer drum housing move togethef but does the inner feel like it moves with a sidewards or upwards movement? Both hands on each side of the inner drum and jiggle.

Or it could be springs stretched or the suspension struts worn.

Is the drum hitting the side panels?
