Loud noises coming from above and below new HWC

I've just looked at the boiler - an Ideal Mexico (V.Old) and the knob was turned up to 6/6 - I've turned it down to 4.

Don't know whether this will make any difference?

Any ideas to what might be the problem?

Your boiler stat is on its way out and allowing the water in the heating circuit to get way too hot hence the thumping and banging

Would turning down the boiler (from 6 to lower) have any effect?

All depends how far gone stat is you may have to turn lower to get noise to stop,
