Low-level WC pan with 'P' trap or 'horizontal outlet'?

Would someone kindly explain the difference in usage between each type (i.e. in what situation would each type be employed)? Thanks.

P trap and horizontal outlet are fundamentally the same thing (ignoring skew spigots).

Do you mean S trap v. P trap?

Thanks for your reply. No, I can see the difference between 'S' trap and the others. Just didn't see the point in the 'P' trap as it's so similar to (though it seems far less widely used than) a horizontal outlet.
 
Before the HO was "invented" there was S, P, Left P, Right P in white - then all the colours we know and love ;)

Sometimes a P trap pan can have a slight downwards angle to it's spigot outlet, a pan that specifies it has a horizontal outlet won't but it's still a P trap appliance, if that makes sense. It's usually down to how the manufacturer describes it.
