I Have a pillar drill in my garage workshop and wish to put up an industrial type bench light above it to see what i am doing i noticed at work all of the drills and lathes are fed from a mains switch which is quite bulky and old fashioned looking but at the bulb end they are only 50v which i assume is for operator safety.I have looked in various catalogue for these type of switches which must contain a transformer but cannot find any.Does anybody know any manufacturer who makes this type of switch or could i wire a 230v/50v transformer myself in a self-contained unit supplied by mains voltage?

why not get a suitable low voltage halogen fitting? you may want to try a "pond light" they are water proof

I've also seen those 50 volt lamps attached to a variety of machine tools. They don't appear to be widely available. Breezer has the right idea. Look for a low voltage halogen spotlight and transformer instead. There are loads to choose from.

If you must, then to use a 48Volt transformer of adequate wattage mounted in an earthed adaptable box is technically fine, although does involve more work than buying a ready made fitting, and a 100watt 48volt transformer will almost certainly be dearer than going down the route of using a mass produced 12V parts.
