low voltage light from light circuit

I have wall mounted light sockets. Am I able to connect this to a transformer and install low voltage lighting, if so what is the wiring circuit for this. Is it also possible to change the socket to a dimmer switch.

need more info.

you are confisuing with the word socket, do you mean light switch?
 
the OP might mean 5 amp round pin sockets installed for standard adn table lamps etc..

I have small 3 pin plug socket in the wall which is a ighting circuit. I want to change it to a dimmer switch and run the 3 small halogen lights via a transfomer
