Does anybody know if it makes any difference to put the LSVs on the inflow pipe of my rads rather than the return pipes?

Also, I have one rad with an odd kind of valve I've not seen before - under the +/- plastic cap it has a metal pin, around which is a black, turnable plastic ring numbered 1-7. How do I set this to fully open so I can start balancing the system?

Traditionally LS are put on the 'outflow' as you call it , the return, but these days with trv's being mostly bi-directional it coes not matter.

The trv you have with numbers on the black ring sounds like it could be a Honeywell.

This numbered ring is used to balance the rad if the trv is on the return.

Can't remember which number is fully open though
