Mégane 1997: Revs up without depressing the accelterator

I've got an old Renault Megane which makes old kinds of funny noises, but the one that concerns me the most is the way it always revs up without my pressing the acelerator. Even if I leave the car in neutral with my feet off the pedals it starts doing 20 -30 revs a minute. The only way I can stop it, or at least reduce it is by putting nthe handbrka eon and applying a bit of bite with the clutch and accelerator, which can't be good for the car generally. Any suggestions as to what it may be?

Check that all pipes are connected on inlet manifold, sounds like it might be sucking to much air, also check that the throttle valve is not sticking, maybe needs a good clean up with carb cleaner

Also get it exorcized, you may have a ghost in it
