may sound silly, but what type of toilet will fit a macerating unit? is there a special kind of wc, or can i just buy any type and get it fitted?

You can get prison style steel pans from plumbers' merchants.

Because the first time it blocks your bathroom will look like the entire population of the Scrbs are having a dirty protest when you try to dismantle it.

And after you've dismantled it you won't be getting any nookie for about six months until the smell clears (unless the Mrs is a coprophile, in which case let her dismantle it, but you still won't want any nookie for about six months).

As said generally any pan will be suitable , providing it is a P trap WC , you might also have difficulty if you opt for one of those back to wall suites where when fitted you cannot see the drain connection , cannot think of the tech name for them ( assuming there is one ?)

any pan will do mate, but not sure about the concealed cistern pan ;) ^
I wouldnt put a macerater behind a wall if it didnt have good access, good luck and remember if its running a great distance vertically some recommend a non return valve (yes on the waste) so that the pump doesnt have to work too hard
