main fuse box makes noise when shower is on

johnd when you say ignore this please i take it it is safe to carry on using the shower

He means ignore the post. It may be he has replied to a wrong thread by accident or something.

It most certainly is not safe to continue using your shower.

As you have identified that the device for your shower is a green proteus FUSE, this is not an MCB (trip switch).

MCBs can sometimes buzz due to a heavily loaded thermal coil, but you do not have an MCB

The buzzing is almost certainly a loose connection.

You need to have this checked before you even thnk of using the shower again. If caugt early a simple repair may be all that is required to repair the fault.

Left alone, before long, the bad joint will heat up and burn out. This will mean your shower will stop working, your fuse box will need replacing, and possibly the wiring to the shower as well.

no I meant ignore my post. I removed it as it was superseded by the time I'd finished it..

I do not know it is safe to use your shower.

I think either you have a loose connection, or a ferrous part is vibrating, possibly the MCB is worn out, possibly the load in your CU exceeds its design current.

There also appears to be no RCD which is an important aid to safety with an electric shower. I see from your earlier post that you have rust inside the shower casing so perhaps it has an internal leak

We really would like to see a photo,

Hi

I have checked all the wires inside the Unit none loose ???

I have also noticed that when the shower is on cold (blue botton) there is no noise coming from the unit only when it is on hot (red button 1 or 2) ???

is this still a loose wire ??

the only area I have not checked is the wire going to the section where the green 45 amp switch pushes into. should I turn off the main switch and check.

Thanks

marley

It is quite often the point where the fuse holder pushes into the CU.

Do you know what you are looking for?

You must ensure you turn off your main switch before you start, as removing the fuse sheild will expose live parts even with the fuse withdrawn.

Can you post us some pictures of your fuse box?

hi

more up to date info

I have checked all the wires (all tight)

What I did was this I turned the shower on and held the proteus 45a switch and gently moved it. (it stopped fizzing)

I believe what the problem is is that I have a Proteus 45a switch fitted into a wylex consumer unit.

it is vivrating in the unit (when held it goes away) I have just ordered two new wylex 40a type b switches to replace what I have, which is a proteus 45a switch and an old style dark brown 45a switch which is wylex.

All of my type b switches will all be wylex in make 2 x 6a for lights 2 x 32a for sockets & 2 x 40a 1 for cooker & one for shower.

Yippe or no ??

Your consumer unit must only have one device exceeding 32A, and this must be the device nearest the main switch.

The devices in your CU are not switches or MCBs. They are fuses. There is a whole world of difference between the three.

You'd better hope you can cancel your order.

The fizzing has possibly damaged the innards of your CU, and needs to be checked by a competant person. If it is damaged, it will get worse and worse regardless of wether you fit a new device or not.

You still haven't told us the rating of your shower, or the cable size.
How on earth can we size up the required OCPD without this info.

You still will not have RCD protection to your shower, which is not good either.

In Wylex/ Proteus land, 45A devices are green & 35/40A devices are orange.
