the main water pipes knocks all day on and off. Knocks for about 5 mins then stops. Sounds like the water in the pipe is being sucked and pushed which causes the knocking. However if I turn it off at the stopcock the knocking stops. Would be most grateful for an answer to this problem.

Check the float valve in the loft (if you have one) and check that the pipe is securely fixed.

Check that the washer in the stop tap is OK.

Had this recently, where if you turned on a tap, it sounded like someone was firing a machine gun. The washer had perished away, and the brass jumper (the bit that the washer seats on) was banging against it's seat.

You will need to turn the main outside stop tap off first. Then, attach a hose to the drain off cock near the internal stop tap, drain water out of pipes above tap, then remove tap's head.

Turn the pressure down a bit via your mains water stopcock.
