Cheers yeh I mean just mains as in 240v. What are compact fluorescents, Im looking through Aurora & Robus catallogues but cant find any. Can they be dimmed and what kind of light do they give off?
Unfortunately CFLs (energy saving) can't be dimmed. Megaman make the lamps.
If you want dimming then it will have to be halogen, you can dim mains downlights. If you opt for ELV then you need to make sure you match the dimmer to the transformer.
Also some dimmers need to be de-rated to accomodate halogens.
Down light normally refers to a lamp which is recessed into the ceiling and this covers a host of devices to little 50mm diameter upwards and the larger types can be dimmed.
The small 50mm lamps can't really be dimmed in any form as quartz halogen will have a much shortened life if dimmed although you still can dim them even if not a good idea.
The extra low voltage type are harder to dim than low voltage and also harder to fit cold cathode or other discharge energy saving lamps.
The larger types can use standard compact florescent or 2D types and there are so many options one could fill a book.
But with the withdrawal of tungsten lamps I would select one which will take energy saving even if you don't use them yet.
