Mains Smoke Alarm

Hi, Does anyone know the difference between an ionisation alarm and a photoelectric alarm?
Going to be fitting a couple but there seems to be a big difference in price between the two.
Would a couple of interlinked Ionisation alarms be suitable for a 2 bedroom flat or would it need to be photoelectric ( if there is any difference )
