Whats the best Smoke alarm to use, a mains powered Ionisation Alarm or a mains powered photo optical smoke alarm? Whats the difference???

Optical Smoke alarms - general smoke alarm particularly suitable for slow smouldering fires, e.g. soft furnishings.

Ionisation Smoke Alarms - designed for fast flaming fires.

Best way to simply explain is

one seas it the other smells it. Really depends on where you want to site the unit. General one and most popular are ionisation.

it does not really smell it.

an ionisation one can detect smaller particles than an optical one
