My mains water shut-off tap is in the loft and hasnt been used for years. Went to turn off yesterday and just wont budge. Is there anything I can lubricate it with and how much torque can I apply before it snaps off?
Unscrewing the gland nut (just under the tap handle) a turn or so can help.
Expect a few drops of water to leak out around the spindle when you loosen it.
Some would apply heat,
Some make for the WD40.
Some old brass fittings can be very brittle. Find, and check your external stop tap is operable. you then have a contingency plan for replacing the internal one if it does all go pear shaped.

Are you sure? It isn't normally. It is normally just above ground level. Look in a pantry or other cupboard, or signs of boxing in. Often under sink or by ground floor WC
