this may be a dumb question but everytime I need to turn the mains water off which I have had to do recently, I need to move my washing machine out of a very tight space and I have damaged my Lino in the process. Is there some kind of extension kit I can buy so I can turn it on/off under the sink instead?

It could be moved to better accessible location or the tap could be turned 180 degrees and an access hole made in the unit. This could be then reached by a stop tap key, through the hole.

Thanks everyone very helpful as always. Would it be possible to have it outside directly behind it. I had an outside tap fitted and it was a simple process as the pipes are right behind it or would that violate code etc? Like the look of the surestop but gets mixed reviews

You wouldn't want the stop cock outside, not because of regs but simply not the best place to put it. Move it right, into the next door's cupboard.

At the same time move and tidy up that pipework, too many connections too close to that socket for comfort. If just one of those connections leaks then you could have a problem.... and get a proper outside tap supply put in, that DIY shed self cutting jobby just aint the best.
